Spring 2020: The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open

Originally screened: February 19, 2020

Directors: Kathleen Hepburn, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers

Country: Canada

Runtime: 105 minutes

Áila (Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers) can immediately tell that Rosie (Violet Nelson), barefoot, alone in the rain, a block away from an abusive boyfriend, needs help. Over the course of the rest of the day, we are immersed in their shared crisis-time: where can Rosie go, how much aid can Áila truly give, and what does it mean to really trust someone? This strong, relentless film takes a setting — Vancouver — that we know mostly as the clean, anonymous backdrop of television and genre entertainment, and renders it specific and uncontrollably alive with equal parts pain and humour.

Where to watch today: The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open is available to stream via Crave and CBC Gem.
